Chrome Extensions May Change

Google has begun to roll out a long-promised update to the way extensions are handled within Chrome. (Extensions are mini-software that provides some sort of feature that isn’t natively included in a browser, such as ad-blocking software.) While updates are normally a good thing, this particular change has privacy advocates like the Electronic Frontier Foundation crying foul. The change, from “Manifest V2” to V3, affects the underlying code that permits extensions to run and limits their capabilities. Google claims this will increase users’ security, while others say it takes important options away from users. Regardless of your feelings on the matter, if you use extensions in Chrome you may begin to see a notification that they are not compatible and will need to find alternatives (or use a different browser like Firefox).
