CloudFlare for Families

I recently had a conversation with a client who has kids of a similar age to mine regarding how to monitor their online safety. One of my recommendations could be useful to a wide range of households, so I’m now sharing it with you all: a free service called “CloudFlare for Families.” Provided by the reputable tech company CloudFlare, this service is a form of DNS filtering. You don’t need to know what that means, other than it blocks sites they classify as hosting malware or adult content. It does require a little bit of technical know-how to edit the appropriate settings on your home router, but once applied it provides this blocking capability to all devices in your home. I’ve been using this free service on my own home router for several years now since my children are old enough to be comfortable using computers. It’s not a perfect solution, and it certainly doesn’t take the place of teaching kids how to use technology appropriately, but it can help prevent accidentally clicking on links that could harm the computer or be offensive. You can follow the steps here to enable this feature, or just reach out to us and we’d be happy to configure it for you.
