Could ChatGPT Fail?

When ChatGPT burst onto the scene in late 2022, it felt like the beginning of a new technological era. Built by OpenAI, the AI chatbot quickly became a household name, praised for its ability to write, reason, and converse in ways that felt almost human. But just a few years later, cracks are beginning to show beneath the hype. Mounting operational costs, increasing competition, regulatory pressure, and questions about long-term sustainability have sparked an uncomfortable conversation: could ChatGPT actually fail? What happened to the AI golden child, and is bankruptcy really a possibility or just another exaggerated tech doomsday prediction?

A 2023 study concluded that it cost roughly $700,000 a day just to maintain the infrastructure required to run the popular chatbot. Today, it is believed that OpenAI is on track to lose $14 billion on expenses such as expanding data centers, training new GPT models, and paying employees.

Unlike other tech giants, ChatGPT is struggling to generate enough revenue to cover these costs. Competitors like Google (Gemini), Microsoft (Copilot), and X’s Grok have alternative revenue streams that help offset the extreme costs of building and expanding AI data centers. As of now, OpenAI generally relies on a single source of income: selling subscriptions. As of April 2025, ChatGPT had 800 million users, but only 10 million were ChatGPT Plus members paying $20 a month. Having to borrow more from investors amidst fears of an AI bubble waiting to burst means they may soon face a much harder time securing financial backing. To combat this, a new change is coming to ChatGPT: advertisements. There is no telling if this new ad-supported model will make a significant dent in OpenAI's losses, but it appears to be a desperate attempt to recoup the money they are burning through.

If you are like me, you use ChatGPT daily for work or perhaps for finding new recipes. It is difficult to imagine a world where OpenAI fails to turn the boat around and ultimately files for bankruptcy. However, when you consider the massive environmental impact of AI, you have to wonder if it might be better for the planet if OpenAI did fail—but that is a topic for another day.
