LG Monitors Install Adware

There is a feature in Windows 11 that allows the automatic installation of software when a new device is connected to the computer.  This is intended to facilitate the setup of a device and make is more seamless for the user. LG is in hot water recently for silently installing the “LG Monitor App” when certain models of LG displays are connected. Normally this wouldn’t be too bad and would probably go unnoticed, except that the app is now displaying advertisements for McAfee! Many users are complaining online about seeing a pop-up advertisement every time they turn on the computer, and LG has confirmed this behavior is intentional. Somewhat surprisingly, Microsoft stepped in and has told LG to stop showing the ads. We definitely live in a world where advertisements are everywhere, and we even expect them when browsing online, but to have an app automatically begin showing you ads after installing a new monitor is a new low.
