We often share in this newsletter information about Microsoft products going “end of support,” such as Windows 10. But what about Apple software? Sadly, Apple isn’t always clear on this topic. And since Apple develops the operating systems that run on their hardware, there can be confusing information about whether a device is still receiving updates or parts. In particular, users should be aware of when their Apple product is no longer able to install the latest operating system. This doesn’t mean you should throw the device away if it can’t; this is because Apple will still provide security updates for older devices for an unspecified and variable period of time. Generally speaking, you can expect a device to be supported for five years past the date Apple stopped selling it. For devices older than that, you’ll have to do a bit of research. This official support page tells you all about the security updates and what devices they are applicable to. For a more understandable resource, this page is my go-to for understanding if an Apple device is on its latest version. If you ever have a question about your Apple device and when to replace it, just drop us a line.
