A few weeks ago I opened up Word on my computer and had a pop-up joyfully tell me that Copilot (Microsoft’s AI tool) was now available with my existing Microsoft 365 subscription. Whether you like the profusion of new AI tools or not, this change impacts everyone with a Microsoft 365 subscription. The cost of both the Personal (1 user) and Family (5 user) annual plans is going up by $30. You’ll see the new price reflected when your annual subscription renews. While nobody likes to pay more, in Microsoft’s defense this is the first price increase in 11 years. Additionally, and more importantly for most readers, there is a way to decline the new Copilot feature and keep the old pricing levels. You just have to pretend to cancel your subscription and then you’ll be offered the non-AI package instead.
