We’ve discussed before that support, including security updates, for Office for Mac 2019 ended last October. (Thankfully Office for Mac 2021 is still good through October 2026.) But all the Mac users out there should also be aware that there is another requirement that may prevent you from using your purchased Office software. Per Microsoft, “Office for Mac [2019, 2021, & 365] is supported on the three most recent versions of macOS.” This means that you could have a legal copy of a still-supported version of Office, but if your Mac isn’t running the right operating system you won’t be able to launch any Office apps like Word or Excel. Currently, the three most recent versions are Sonoma (v14), Ventura (v13), and Monterey (v12). When the to-be-named MacOS version 15 comes out this fall and version 12 drops off the supported list, you will need upgrade your operating system or replace the Mac entirely if it can’t run Ventura. If you’d like assistance understanding these requirements and if you might be affected later this year, feel free to reach out to us.
