Microsoft has released a new feature for their browser that I think a lot of Edge users will be excited for: a “Scareware” blocker. Scareware is the name given to the style of scam that attempts to frighten you into contacting a scammer, often through the use of full-screen pop-ups. Everyday attackers are finding new ways and exploits to steal our valuable information and Microsoft is helping create a way to mitigate these attacks. The Scareware blocker leverages artificial intelligence to identify and block these popups or scams before you see them. With AI getting better every day, hopefully one day those pesky fake tech support scams will become a thing of the past.

If you are interested in enabling the Scareware blocker, follow these steps: Open Edge > click … in the top left > Settings > Privacy, Search, and Services > Security > Scareware Blocker. Note this feature is still in beta and in our internal testing shows it is far from perfect, but it’s still an added layer of protection that will only get better.

Browser warning: "Dangerous" site with red alert icon. Text reads "This site looks suspicious." Options to continue or close page displayed.
