In a prior article I talked about a scam that involved fake job postings, with the goal to steal an applicant’s personal information and identity. Now comes news of the reverse trick: fake job applicants applying for real positions. In the elaborate version of this ruse, the scammer is using “deep fake” technology to simulate a highly-qualified person on a live video chat interview. But even plain old humans may be faking their knowledge and experience in order to land a (usually remote) job. And because employers are desperate for skilled help, they often overlook warning signs. In these scam situations, the company happily hires the applicant and send them a hiring bonus and company-issued laptop or cell phone - and never hears from the scammer again.
