We've been seeing an uptick in the number of calls about the fake Microsoft (or McAfee or Norton or Apple) security alerts. This is the phoney alert that may show up on your computer, often after clicking on a search link, that tries to convince you that many things are wrong with your computer and you should call this "official" phone number for remediation. Let me be clear: if the pop-up or email you receive is prompting you to call a phone number, it is not legitimate! When in doubt you are welcome to call us for confirmation, but that one rule of thumb will apply to >99% of cases. To get rid of the alerts, simply do the one thing they say not to: turn off your computer. You may have to hold down the power button for 10 seconds to forcibly shut it down, but then it will turn back on like normal afterwards.
