Do you have sixty seconds to refresh your memory on IT best practices? Here’s a brief summary of some of the suggestions that I want everyone to know about staying safe on the internet:
Don’t open attachments, click links, or respond to emails you weren’t expecting. Shipment notifications for packages you don’t remember, purchase confirmations for antivirus you never ordered, and friends who are suddenly traveling and need gift cards – all are scams!
Reboot your computer at least once a week. Many critical updates require a reboot to be fully applied.
Use unique passwords. Bonus points for long and complex passwords! Consider using a password manager to help make this easier.
Never call a phone number provided to you – particularly through an email, pop-up message, or search result. In the case of financial matters, call the number printed on your bank statement or on the back of your credit card.
When in doubt, take a deep breath. Scammers prey on our emotional responses! Shut down the computer and call a trusted friend.
