Tech companies are all about cloud and encouraging (coercing?) us into using their cloud-based products. The biggest draw appears to be photo storage and making it easy to for us to backup all the pictures we take on our smartphones. But you’ll soon find that the free storage (5GB for Apple iCloud or 15GB for Google) can’t hold everything you want to keep. Signing up for the buck or two a month plan sure is a lot easier than trying to decide which pictures to delete. But did you know that both Apple and Google offer family plans? This can lessen the sting of paying and help share the storage benefits with those in your household. Google’s lowest paid tier is $1.99/mo for 100GB, but lets you share the storage quota with up to 5 others. iCloud+ has its lowest paid tier at half that: $0.99/mo for 50GB, and also lets you share with up to 5 others. For both providers, sharing does not share your actual data with anyone else; rather, you share the same storage quota and the cumulative data cannot exceed the plan limit. One further tip for Google users: since you are likely to be using the cloud storage for quite some time, take advantage of the annual pricing which lets you buy 12 months for the price of 10 (Apple does not offer annual pricing).
