Several folks recently inquired about trending news articles discussing the leak this summer of the “world’s largest” compilation of passwords, and whether they should be worried. This particular leak has about 9.9 billion passwords in it, but “only” about 1.5 billion are estimated to not be part of previously-released databases. These kinds of massive lists are helpful to hackers who are trying to crack into an account. Rather than try all possible random passwords (quadrillions of combinations), they will first try known passwords – such as the 9.9 billion in this list. So should you be worried? If you’ve been taking our advice to use unique passwords for every account and enable multi-factor authentication wherever possible, then no! But if you are the type of person who reuses passwords then yours is quite likely to be part of this database and you should consider changing them.
